Etna erupting at night: a lava fountain from the crater and an incandescent flow

Volcanological guides · Etna North

Guided tours with certified volcanological guides, from Piano Provenzana to Etna's summit craters.

Forest · Piano Provenzana · 1.800 m a.s.l.

It starts at Piano Provenzana

The Etna North square, 1,800 metres, among pine woods and Etna birches. Here you meet the guide, check your gear, and the trail begins.

2002 lava · End of the green

Where the green ends

Here the landscape changes with every step. The forest stops abruptly: the 2002 eruption rewrote this slope and the black ground takes over.

The group of hikers at sunset in front of the eruption: human scale on the volcano

2002 lava · 2,000 m a.s.l.

2002. The mountain rewrote this slope.

Extinct cones, lava channels, pines that survived the flow. Here the northern slope's most recent eruption is crossed on foot, and the volcano's scale is measured in steps.

Walk here — Craters of 2002

A lone hiker on the lava field at dusk, in the ash desert

The higher you climb, the further the world falls behind.

The climb on the high-altitude ash trail, with the coast on the horizon

Ash desert · High altitude

The air gets thinner and ash takes the place of everything. On the horizon, the coast.

Summit craters · 2,800+ m a.s.l.

The summit craters

The realm of the fumaroles. The highest point of the journey, where the volcano breathes and, on clear days, you can see the Ionian coast and the Aeolian Islands.
